A renewed love for lip liners stemmed from an afternoon of frivolity — trying out CoverGirl lip makeup and hamming it up in front of the webcam — came as a surprise since I was entering a period of lull and I didn’t need the extra fuss in makeup. Heck, what makeup? But I couldn’t get it out of my system. ‘Twas like that Pringles tagline, “once you pop, you can’t stop” sort of thing. Using a lip liner under my lipstick or lip gloss just made sense and it felt natural to squeeze it into the routine.
Then came the need for variety. Er, it was more of a specific look and a better fit than added options. I had wanted a lip liner or pencil to create nude lips: MAC Lip Pencil in Subculture (bought together with a couple to complete the look: MAC Cremesheen Lipstick in Creme Cup and MAC Plush Glass in Ample Pink — the combo gives my lips a dewy, nude-but-not-deathly-pale look).

But I also wanted something that looked more natural and neutral. I needed the mother of all lip liners. Something that suits my natural lip shade, which I can use with any of the lip makeup (lipstick, lip gloss) I own: MAC Lip Pencil in Dervish. Oh my. Can I just say how finding it made me even more addicted to lip liners? It has become a part of a trio of lip makeup I wear regularly (see sample photo and break down below).
When I was younger, I thought using lip liners meant tracing a solid line along the perimeter of the lips and the colour of your liner should match your lipstick perfectly (otherwise, both won’t blend well), which intimidated me, of course. However, age and experience helped sort things out for me.

[In photo] Lip Makeup: MAC Lip Pencil in Dervish, NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita, NARS Lip Gloss in Orgasm. (Sometimes, I also switch lipsticks, MAC Amplified Creme Lipstick in Cosmo instead of the Dolce. I would still end up with great natural looking lip makeup, haha.)
Why I use lip liner right now: (1) Definition of contour; (2) Neutralising lip colour prior lipstick application; and (3) Affect a shift in colour.
How about you? Do you use lip liners? Which brand of lip liner are you using right now?
