Off to Work in Flats
By tradition, Mondays mean a work outfit that leans toward the more formal business or corporate attire (at least from experience). It’s probably due to all the meetings and such which are usually held on this work day. But there are three (3) reasons why I opted to wear flats with a dress on a Monday.

Reason 1. Current weather.
I didn’t want to get caught in a work attire which can be troublesome in case of a downpour. It’s actually a stretch that I wore a dress.
Reason 2. Giving my feet a break.
If you know me, my shoe preference would always be stilettos but we all know that subjecting your feet to wear such taxing, no matter how fabulous-looking, shoes everyday can lead to soreness. I need to let up on my feet every now and then.
Reason 3. Long Walks.
I reckon I walk a good kilometer — combined morning, lunch time, and going home — each day. Apart from touching on Reason #2, I’m also worried about wear and tear. I’ve already managed to ruin one pair of stilettos so I need to watch it. Resist the urge to use this as a reason to shop for new shoes (highly tempting, though!)
I wore my PROMOD ballerina flats in grey (good thing it didn’t rain!) with a black dress. Sorry, no photo of the outfit today due to tech difficulties. Hehe.

Anyway, I believe there’s nothing wrong with opting for flats on a Monday. I’ve noticed that some women can still manage to look professional even without heels.
How about you ladies? How often do you use flats to work? Why do you wear them?

I’m 5′8 so flats are a staple for me, even for corporate wear.:) I totally agree - you can still look professional even with flats.
Wow, 5′8″! You’d be SO tall if you wear heels! I’m still trying out different ways to wear flats with work outfits and still end up looking not too casual. I’m used to wearing stilts so if I take away the heels in certain looks, I often feel, er, incomplete. Ah, well. I’m sure I’ll somehow manage to strike a balance.
Before I transferred to my new office in QC, I used to wear heels all the time. But since the commute is much farther now (I live in Paranaque) I’ve been wearing flats more often. I still prefer heels, though, cause I think it looks best with corporate attire, but I guess it’s not practical for me to commute in them.
That’s quite a commute! How do you stand it? I have to agree that flats are more practical if you don’t have your own car and will have to commute via public transpo. I actually bring a pair of flip-flops for cases wherein my feet need rest — which usually happens at the end of the work day. Hehe. It’s extra baggage (good thing they fit in my handbag) but I reckon it’s better I have them with me, esp now that the weather’s acting up, than suffer sore feet and legs when I get home.
I’m a 100% flats girl. I always walk on cobbled streets most of the time so I rarely walk on heels. I believe in comfort first before fashion. Besides, using high heels most of the time can deform your toes in the long run.
Hard to walk on cobbled streets in heels, true. On the toes getting deformed, I haven’t heard that one before. Whoa. Is that verifiable information?
It really depends in the weather. Like today, it’s raining so I’m wearing flats with my black slacks. And it still have that corporate style.
I can’t stand stilletos kasi, pinupulikat ako and I always break the heels. dear me!
So when it calls for heels, I go for wedges, 1 to 2 inches is enough.
Sasha,
About the toes getting deformed, I think when you wear close-fitting shoes for a long time with heels. I’ve seen it on my MIL who’s 82 right now and who still wears close shoes. My golly,it’s not a pretty sight.
Walking on cobbled stone is really difficult with high heels and bad for your shoes as well. When I first came to Europe and on my first day of job, I wore my 3-inch high heels to the office and came home with blisters on my feet and scratches on my shoes. I admire those European who can carry on wearing stilettos in these countries.
[...] Style Manila tells us why she went to work wearing flats. [...]
I’m a midget at 5″3, so I really need all the extra inches I can get. However, my feet can only stand 2 to 3 inches of heels (nothing more, shame!) even when wearing corporate attire.
BTW I’m trying to save up for Cole Haan/Nike heels which, they claim, are pairs you can actually run in. Do you happen to have a pair Ms. Sasha?
What you’re suggesting is what actually a lot of working girls fail to remember.
Even though it’s sexier to wear high heel shoes to work, still, it’s safe to be cautious of the upcoming weather. Especially in the Philippines, you’ll never guess when it’ll rain or be sunny out.
Weather-wise, the country’s ok. It’s not that unpredictable. If working women opt for comfort, I’m sure most won’t fail to remember to slip on their favourite flat shoes. I know more women who prefer flats over stilts.
