Beauty Review: TBS and e.l.f. Lippies

20 May 2009 2,721 views 10 Comments

This may not be true for some but, personally, my Summer makeup preference will often include lippies.

When we talk of lippies, we can either mean the actual lipstick or refer to glosses. In this case, I’m talking about a couple of glosses that I’ve managed to get my hands on. Though my MAC lipsticks (Modesty, What A Do! & Bombshell) may have been huge distractions, I haven’t forgotten that I still owe you folks a bit of a closer look on these two babies.

A quick refresher, I bought the e.l.f. Candy Shop Lip Gloss in Mocha Madness at The Ramp (Glorietta) early this year. And the Yes Yes Yes Tantalising Lip Butter was gifted.

Who hasn’t had a taste of Mocha? I’m sure most of you have. And if you’re a fan of it, you’d appreciate a pretty handy way of getting a dose of it each time you dab this gloss on your lips.

What attracted me most and had caused me to buy it is the vintage-looking tin with sliding lid, er, apart from the fact that I do love lippies. I guess this attraction only runs skin deep. Yes, I was a tad bit disappointed.

I can understand the allure to teens who are just beginning to venture into the whole makeup world. Wanting to spruce up the lips without attracting too much attention like if they had lipstick on (it can be a no-no to wear makeup to school, at least, that’s how it was during my time) so they turn to lip glosses.

True enough, wearing this gloss does let you enjoy the candy without the cavity, as how they’ve put it. It does feel like sugar on your lips. Sweet and sticky. It’s not exactly my cup of tea, sadly. I prefer my glosses to have that nourishing factor (esp if I wear them alone) and to be comfortable to wear.

Ever since I discovered lip glosses/balms/butters from The Body Shop, I’ve never looked at glosses the same way again. Apart from earning my trust, the brand has earned my respect. I’ve always been pretty much satisfied with every product I’ve used. This lip butter performed no different.

Unscrewing the lid, I get a whiff of a pleasant berry-like scent. Dabbing a portion of the butter, my lips are treated to a lip-softening experience. It’s light enough that it’s not annoying to wear and I appreciate how it moisturises my lips. It’s a perfect lip care companion to a recent trip to Baguio, my skin tends to dry up in cold weather.

Though I’m not a huge fan of the scent — my favourite TBS lip balm is the seasonal Cranberry — it’s not too overpowering. However, whenever I do smell it, I’m close to getting nauseous . Gah. So yea, for that reason, I rarely use it too.

But if you’re feeling a bit charitable, buying a pot will help further the efforts of raising funds for MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, an organization which aims to empower and support young people who are protecting themselves and their communities against HIV and AIDS. All proceeds will go straight to the foundation. Now, that’s beauty with a conscience, yes?

Can you imagine that? Having two lippies collecting dust and growing cobwebs on my vanity table? Ah, well. If any of you folks are interested to have them, just let me know and I’ll gladly ship them to you. That is, if you don’t mind getting them at their current state.

Anyway, floor’s open to your thoughts. Have any of you folks tried any of these lippies? How was your experience?

I got the TBS lip butter a month ago, these pots aren’t on sale last time I checked since the whole Php195.00 goes to MTV’s HIV/AIDS campaign. I <3 mine very much. I think this year is a teeny-bit better than last year’s (except for the price since last year’s was cheaper! :D)
