Revisiting an Old Habit

old sewing materials

DIY. Sewing. A part of fashion that I’ve always wanted to dip my hand in. It’s actually a strange habit I picked up as I started to buy my own clothes. I tend to buy certain unwearable pieces (in my book) with the intent of altering them to better suit my taste and make them more original. Sort of.

I’ve always done the alterations by hand. With my mediocre talent in sewing and all, I still do it. I guess that’s how I’m built. I didn’t always have the money to buy the exact item that I have in mind that’s why I had to learn how to make do. Something I learned to appreciate cuz it helped me exercise my creativity, making my personal style bolder and more experimental. But I’m still far off from qualifying for Project Runway. Whatta understatement. Heh.

Anyway. One of my pending projects is this skirt that’s never been worn. It’s actually growing cobwebs in my wardrobe. It’s over a year old.

I’ve been meaning to do some alterations on it, however, I could never make time for it. One, cuz I need a sewing machine and I don’t own a need and a thread. Two, cuz I have too many other things that I need and want to do. And, three, cuz I’m simply un-inspired.

However, since I found sewing materials while organising some old stuff in my old home, it rekindled the old desire to alter and create. I’m now toying with the idea of going to a proper school (I actually asked around back in 2003).

Funny how some old memories turn up and remind you of the roads you had considered taking, yea? What can I say. I guess, fashion has always been part of me ever since I held my first Barbie and started making clothes out of old shirt scraps. Makes me wonder why I have a Business degree when clearly it’s not what fuels my passion.

Ah, well.

Everything happens for a reason.

[…] all. But I’m conditioning myself on mini-DIY project real soon. Sometimes, it’s good to get back to old habits. Tags: 80s, alteration, basque, DIY, leather, Leather Basque Skirt, skirt, TopshopShare This […]

It does, doesn’t it? I bet there are hundreds out there who’d admit to the same thing. ;)

hello there! that is so true. first off, i started with my Barbies too. Me and my mom would sew clothes for them. You should consider the fashion school thing. It’s never too late. I have a Microbiology degree and doing lab work full time but my love for fashion and design drove to me to pursue a Fashion degree at FIDM here in California. It’s hard schedulewise but you gotta go for what you love. have fun on the sewing project. I have a skirt and a dress on hold too ( for myself) but I’m into crocheting right now. :)

Very empowering. Thanks for sharing. I guess I should really think about it some more. :D
