Metallics, Grays and Personal Style

Sasha Manuel | Mango Tunic in Metallic Gray

In keeping up with the trend of metallics and grays, I’ve decided to feature a recent outfit I put together, worn during the Mrs. Fields Cookie Café Launch held last Tuesday, 21 August 2007 over at their Manila Pavilion branch, located on United Nations Avenue.

If you’re a regular, you’ve probably come across the post wherein I featured the Mango Tunic in Metallic Gray I’m wearing in the photo. I decided to give you a glimpse of one of the styling ideas I have for the said top and here’s how I described the outfit to readers at Tops 2 Bottoms,

I worn it over a white camisole, with a pair of flared denim jeans with a piped accent on the crease, and my black quilted patent stilettos. If you’re wondering about the accessories, I merely wore my candy earrings, black and silver bangles and a silver cocktail ring.

I’ve been asked numerous times on how (and where!) I shop and, yes, there were also questions on how I put together outfits. It’s a discussion worthy of a workshop, really. Apart from the fact that I can be as detailed as possible when you engage me to talk about fashion and styling and, oftentimes, I find it easier to do a makeover in order to explain the foundation of an individual’s personal style.

I believe that people have their own unique tastes and views on these topics, all of them valid and suitable. However, there are individuals who carry a measuring stick, judging others’ fashion sense with their own or what the fashionista mob thinks as “stylish”. Also, there are individuals who think that keeping up with the latest trends will ensure high marks on their personal style. Truth is, trends are fleeting occurrences in fashion. Yes, it will earn you a ticket to be considered a fashionista but the problem with just being trendy is, aside from its lack of timelessness, it creates a dependency in an individual, hence, losing his or her own identity (style-wise) in the process. These people will just be a face in the crowd, indistinguishable no less.

What I always tell my friends is never let the clothes wear you, grab the wheel and take control. Fashion is all about personal expression. It’s a form of art and, sweetie, imitation may be the best form of flattery but I’d rather have you wear whatever you want and whatever makes you feel good than blend in or, worse, be a reflection of a passing fancy. I enjoy it immensely whenever I see my friends wear clothes that’s unmistakably them, know what I mean?

I’m not saying you shouldn’t be caught dead wearing metallics or grays or wide leg pants or any of the current trends since it can be seen as a form of “selling out”. Rather, I suggest that you enjoy these trends, sift through each and every fashion find that comes your way and experiment. I’m quite sure you can use the trend to suit your personal style instead of the other way around.

Fashion is not and will never be rocket science. It’s hardcore winging and a large dose of trial and error. Keep yourselves open to inspirations and new ideas. Be bold. No one can ever tell you that you’re wrong about your own personal style. And remember — I always love telling my readers this bit — have fun!

Gray is one of the trends that I loved. I’m hoping it has a longer fashion shelf life!
