Remind me to tune myself out when I hear a talk show program discuss anything related to fashion and styling on an AM Station. My head hurts. Handing out style tips, making me listen to her crap on what’s hot during this rainy season? Egad. The woman must be going mental.

She tells her listeners — which, unfortunately, includes me — that the popular skinny jeans are out and cargo bottoms are in. Reason being is that the latter’s more comfortable and more practical for the rainy season. Imagine me raising an eyebrow, my jaw almost dropping to the floor and screaming in my head, “OMG. It’s the end of the world!” Not.

Thank god I wasn’t holding anything in my hand cuz I would’ve most probably thrown it at the radio simply to shut her up. What a bunch of bullocks.

In the hope to educate this particular radio announcer, there’s a difference between styling and clothing as a necessity. The level of hotness or popularity doesn’t automatically discredit its practicality rather it’s measured aesthetically on top of practicality. Everyone needs clothes but there are individuals who are creative in going about this basic need.

The fashion calendar follows certain seasons as per dictated by the market and, of course, a designer’s influence. An individual’s sense of style can work around weather changes and utilise whatever is available. But calling something hot as “no longer hot cuz it’s the rainy season” requires a bit more than an announcement esp when delivered as if it’s some sort of ordinance that you’d expect people to follow in a snap.

I like cargos, believe me, I do. Yes, they are comfortable and can be downright stylish, however, I also happen to like skinny jeans. Just because it’s raining, you’re telling me that the latter has lost its luster? I beg to disagree. Cargos have been in fashion even before the skinny came into the scene, however, the latter simply catered to a different set of fashionistas or is used for certain looks and reasons. The skinny, however, is not for every one. There are only certain people who can pull off wearing a skinny because it simply isn’t flattering for some shapes.

The skinny is just one type of jeans and jeans happen to be practical during rainy days. Perhaps you think they’re too tight, hence, the limited movement? They actually make them in stretch denim, which makes them easier to wear. You don’t even have to worry about the hem dragging on the pavement, aggravating wear and tear for the garment. You can wear it with camis, tanks, baby tees, shirt tunics (and simply throw on a dress jacket, coat or a hoodie jacket) and as for footwear, flats, boots (even those cute rain boots), flip-flops, Zara shoes and Chucks work! Most, if not all, outfits you can come up with are actually pretty comfortable and appropriate for the weather.

So, tell me again why you think the skinny is out and cargos are in. I simply want to know why you’d make such a sweeping statement, please.

I sure hope your listeners would know better.
